So, I know that a lot of you think it's funny that I do a lot of christian bashing considering that I'm kind of a....christian. But one of a different persuasion than the majority.
So, overhearing my roommates, I hear:
"So what are you planning on doing (with your life) next year"
"Oh I haven't thought that far ahead."
My initial reaction was: Really? One year is that far ahead? I thought normal people thought "far ahead" was like 10 years or something more reasonable. I know people who know what their stock portfolio will look like in 45 years.
Back to my point: many Christians often treat life quite fatalistically. I know first-hand because I've heard it a billion times and I've believed it a billion times. "Don't worry about your life, God will take care of it." While that narcotic-like phrase may make many Christians feel safe and secure, I also think it's a bit naive. "Don't worry" doesn't equate to "don't plan ahead." I see it like this; God HAS taken care of every human because we have FUCKING brain, so use it, stupid! Don't swathe yourself in stupid slogans and sing "kum-bah-ya" to the wind. Do something!
I guess I'm ranting because I see this behavior a lot from the teachers at this foreign school I'm teaching at. They hate the school and its president so much but they won't leave (namely my sister and her husband), and my brother-in-law's excuse is: It must be God's will. Wait, it's God's will for you to be miserable? Really? Do something! Go find a job in American instead of sitting on your ass and playing videogames all fucking day long! I know I've been incredibly proactive about finding a job to get myself out of this hellhole, and guess what? It's paid off! I have 2 job offers. Suck that!
Also, the aforementioned person above who refuses to think ahead for her life? She's almost 30. So wow, talk about being mature and informed.
Now, I'm not saying that everyone should have a preplanned time table for their whole life. Of course, you should be spontaneous and open-minded. That's exactly one of the reasons that I decided to take 2 years off before I went back to school! However, I'm not stupid enough to think that I wouldn't plan on higher aspirations and better opportunities in the future. I think it's stupid that a lot of these teachers aren't even thinking about graduate degrees, especially if they're planning on continuing their teaching careers. Staying at this stupid school is unreasonable; it doesn't even offer any compensation for attaining higher degrees like most American schools will offer. Furthermore, there are no comparable graduate schools in this country! You can only get those kind of teaching degrees in America!
Anyway, I feel like I'm surrounded by cows in more than one sense. There are those cows that their cud everyday in the field, but there are definitely cows in our schools. They constantly chew their cud and get absolutely nowhere and continue to stand in their confining stall.
